A moderately sized oak tree with reddish brown, heavy, strong, close-grained, knotty wood; found from eastern Texas to northern Florida, and along the Atlantic coast to Long Island; used for house framing lumber, millwork, and flooring; often marketed as red oak; Quercus phellos. (Bucher, 1996)
