« Back to Glossary Index

The ratio of mixing water to cement in a unit of volume of concrete or mortar mix, preferably expressed by weight as a decimal fraction but often stated in gallons of water per 94-lb. sack of cement. The water-cement ratio controls the strength, durability, and watertightness of hardened concrete. (Ching, 1995)
