A yellowish red paint pigment composed of mercuric sulfide (HgS); originally mined as cinnabar; beginning ca. 9th century primarily manufactured from a mixture of mercury and sulfur; color varieties include Chinese vermilion, English vermilion, Dutch vermilion, and French vermilion.
