three-by-three pattern
A pattern that occurred on every single continent dating back to at least 500 BC in China. Established the geometry of famous points of architecture: left, center, right; and top, center, bottom. The center has boundaries, and can be large or small. The geometry does not have to be rigorous. Pattern can be asymmetrical. Architecture that we protect tends to induce pleasure, and this is caused by the three-by-three pattern. Innate within humans is looking for the pattern, and going to great lengths to reconstruct the pattern. When the main idea is clear everything falls into place easily and harmoniously. This does not mean there may be no deviation from the pattern. Deviations can be celebrated if the foundations are solid.
