Or “the ‘section'” for the Section of Painting and Sculpture, later called Section of Fine Arts (1934-1943), established to commission murals and sculpture for U.S. government buildings. This was not a relief program, and was intended to glorify federal buildings with the best available art. Artists were selected via juried competition.
