Any of numerous species of pale-colored, antlike social insects of the order Isptera; typically consume dead wood; indigenous North American species have underground nests connected to their food source (such as the wood in a building) by shelter tubes made of mud; Formosan termites found in southern U.S. can nest above ground inside buildings. Also known as white ant. See also carpenter ant. (Bucher, 1996)
