Saint Oscar Romero
He never wanted to be a hero, just a good pastor. As a priest, he worked hard and he followed the rules.He was a part of the establishment, and they made him a bishop. But then Oscar Arnulfo Romero changed.He walked through the streets of his city and saw the suffering of his people; and he walked through the halls of power and saw the indifference of their leaders. “It is not God’s will that some have everything and others have nothing,” he told his flock. This priest had become troublesome.The archbishop spoke of a revolution, not of class, but of conscience. In the face of repression and death squads, he spoke of love and justice. And his people saw in him a true example of Christ, and that gave them hope.Other priests were being murdered and the archbishop knew he could be next, but he would not be quiet. “If they kill me, I will rise again in the Salvadoran people.” Moments before they shot him down in his own church, the archbishop delivered his final homily:”One must not love oneself so much, as to avoid getting involved in the risks of life that history demands of us, and those that fend off danger will lose their lives.” (Solanus Casey Center, 2026) Photo from Detroit, Michigan, 2026.
