plug and feather
A combination of three pieces, usually of iron, for splitting stone. It consists of two half-round bars which are placed in a hole drilled in the stone for the purpose, and between the flat sides of which is driven the third piece having a wedge shape. The last appears to be generally known as the plug, although feather would seem more appropriate from the general meaning of that term. (Sturgis, 1900)
