In Greek architecture, a wall enclosing consecrated grounds, generally in connection with a temple. The area so enclosed. In the Middle Ages, the wall enclosing the choir, the atrium, or any other sacred place; or the other walls surrounding the precinct about a church, and forming the outmost bounds allowed for refuge and sanctuary.
