The 192 figures in the cavalcade on the have been ingeniously interpreted as an attempt to represent the dead heroes of Marathon. Controlling their mounts without stirrups: their beauty is marvelous, and the absence of gear increases it, but the early mediaeval invention of the stirrup would transform the power of cavalry.
