A simple beam extending beyond one it supports. The overhang reduces the positive moment at midspan while developing a negative moment at the base of the cantilever over the support. Assuming a uniformly distributed load, the projection for which the moment over the support is equal and opposite to the moment at midspan is approximately 5/8 of the span. (Ching, 1995)
