A large oak tree with light reddish brown, close-grained, hard, extremely strong wood; found in the northeast U.S. and Canada, and as far south as northern Louisiana and west to eastern Kansas; used for lumber, flooring, and interior trim; Quercus borealis, and the larger Quercus borealis maximus. Also known as red oak. (Bucher, 1996)
