A Gnostic life symbol in Iraq. Perhaps because of its purple berries, this fragrant shrub, growing wild in the Mediterranean and sometimes ued for victors’ wreaths, was chiefly associated with love goddesses, especially the Greek Aphrodite, and with rituals surrounding marriage and childbirth.
