Ladies organized them and they showcased ladies’ work. Often raised money to aid soldiers’ hospitals and relief organizations during the Civil War. Also raised money for churches, hospitals, schools, orphanages, old-age homes and even for political issues like temperance. (Zukowski, 2006)
