In Greek, an arena; that is, a place covered with sand or dust. Commonly, in archaeology, the orchestra of the Greek theatre; but as the plan and disposition of the orchestra is greatly in dispute, it is used sometimes for the whole enclosure and sometimes for a limited part of it. (Sturgis, 1900)
