In framing, especially in carpentry work, a piece, usually horizontal, between uprights, such as studs, or in the slope of a roof between the rafters, or forming the lower member of a system of trussed framing as in supporting a partition over a wide opening. The intertie may be at once a strut and a tie, and by its means two adjacent struts or rafters brace one another mutually. (Sturgis, 1900)
