A box for carrying building materials, especially mortar; usually shaped like a trough and with a pole secured to the bottom. The trough or box being set upon the laborer’s shoulder, the pole serves to steady and balance the load. Hods are now usually raised to the scaffolding by machinery of some kind. (Sturgis, 1900)
