A small opening for light and air, or for the discharge of missiles, in the wall or parapet of a mediaeval castle; usually widening toward the interior, or backed by an embrasure. The opening was usually round or square, or else extremely long and narrow; sometimes with a cross slit, or enlarged at the center or ends by a round aperture for the discharge of firearms. (Sturgis, 1900)
