A metallic plate fastened upon a door, bearing the name of the occupant of the house. The custom of using these, once almost universal in many towns, has been abandoned, partly because of the facility which it gave to dishonest beggars. The name was often engraved on a silver plated circle surrounding the bell pull. (Sturgis, 1900)
