Soon expanded to include the descendants of Frenchsoldiers and African-West Indian women. Finally, it cameto distinguish one likely to be of mixed racial and cultural background who, unlike strangers and foreigners, spoke the Creolelanguage and was well acclimated to the complex culture and difficult environment of the New Orleans area.
