The natural tendency of certain materials, especially of stones and crystals, to fracture or split in certain definite directions determined by the molecular or physical structure of the material; also, the direction or manner in which such materials tend to divide. Thus, stones which have a stratified structure are commonly capable of being readily divided in the direction of the layers. (Sturgis, 1900)
