A steel column fabricated from a number of structural steel shapes, as W-shapes, channels, angles, and plates. The arrangement of elements and cross-sectional shape of a built-up steel column is not only a response to constructional and aesthetic conditions, but must also provide the largest possible radius of gyration in response to buckling conditions. 2. A wood column formed by fastening or gluing cover plates to two or more parallel planks, or boxing planks around a solid core. A built-up column is never equal in strength to a solid column of comparable material and overall dimensions. (Ching, 1995)
