dressings

« Back to Glossary Index

Term for all finishes, moldings, ornaments, dressed stones, and the like (often projecting) around an aperture (e.g. door or window), distinguished from the rest of the naked of a wall. A façade of brick or rubble with stone dressings, therefore, has most of the wall-surface of those materials, but quoins, architraves, and the like are of dressed stone so that door- and window-frames can be accurately fixed.
