counter ceiling

A secondary ceiling interposed between the floor and ceiling of a room, to exclude sounds originating in the room above. A layer of sound-obstructing material or deafening, either mineral wool, sawdust, or the like, is sometimes spread over the upper surface of the counter ceiling to assist in opposing the transmission of sound.
