A secondary ceiling interposed between the floor and ceiling of a room, to exclude sounds originating in the room above. A layer of sound-obstructing material or deafening, either mineral wool, sawdust, or the like, is sometimes spread over the upper surface of the counter ceiling to assist in opposing the transmission of sound. (Sturgis, 1900)
