The area of Mexico and Central America in which the presence of certain pre-Hispanic culture traits permits the classification of the cultures of the region as one civilization; includes central and southern Mexico, the Yucatan peninsula, Guatemala, El Salvador, and parts of Honduras, Nicaragua, and northern Costa Rica.
