super-elevation

« Back to Glossary Index

The height of the outer rail above that of the inner rail on curved tracks. The rails are thus placed in order to overcome the tendency of a car or train going at high speed to fly off the track. The super-elevation is governed by the speed and degree of curvature. (Bridge, 2019)
