The picture plane was flattened and broken into asymmetrical segments, and images were rendered as stylized forms and set into the segments – as pictures within pictures. Motifs became cliches such as the sunflower, the peacock, and Oriental imagery. There were juxtapositions of scale, bizarre imagery, abandonment of logical perspective and unnatural color.
