Seattle is ahead of many cities in recognizing the value of trees. These are listed on colorful well designed sleeves with the messaging “Plant a Tree Today!” on one side and “Trees are the answer” on the other.

Some of the benefits of planting trees then follow.

    list">
  1. Invest in your home. Trees planted today will pay handsome dividends for future generations. Planting trees around your home will provide decades of enjoyment while substantially increasing its value. Homes with trees planted out front are proven to fetch higher prices in less time on the market than those without street-trees/" class="glossaryLink" data-cmtooltip="42aed8ae2ec12ec7d8e27b054ce78210" target="_blank" >street trees.
  2. Save energy. Trees cool our communities by shading buildings and pavement, and by evaporating water through their leaves. The cooling effect of one large tree equals that of 10 room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day. Planting 3-4 trees to shade your home can reduce summer cooling costs by 30%-50%.
  3. Improve air quality. Trees clean the air by absorbing harmful pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrous oxides and particulate matter that can cause asthma and other respiratory problems. Powered by sunlight, trees convert carbon dioxide into life-giving oxygen. Two mature shade trees can produce enough oxygen for a family of four.
  4. Conserve water. Trees intercept rainfall and slow the rate of storm runoff. They reduce flooding and soil erosion and improve water quality by filtering contaminants and preventing harmful chemicals from entering streams and ground water. Heat and drought tolerant trees save water and reduce utility costs.
  5. Enhance health. Trees contribute to healthier living by encouraging outdoor activity. Views of trees speed healing, improve mental health, and enhance learning. Tree-rich environments reduce stress and lessen the incidence of heart and respiratory disease, skin cancer, depression, obesity and various other ailments.
