Coykendall, Sophia H. Winfield, 1817

    Died August 17, 1908

Sophia H. Winfield was born in Canadice, New York, on January 28, 1817. She was the youngest of ten children, all of whom lived past the age of 82. The city of Winfield, Kansas, was named for one of her brothers, who was the first settler there.

Sophia married James M. Coykendall in 1836, and their family moved to Michigan in 1846, settling first in the Grass Lake area, then Leoni Township, and finally in Concord Township by 1863. They farmed for several years in the area, while raising two sons: Marvin and Merrit. Sophia was a member of the Methodist Church most of her life. She died August 17, 1908.
