Masonry, especially of silicious stone, converted into hard glassy substance by fire and thus greatly solidified, as in certain early defensive works found in Scotland, France, etc. Argillaceous earth is sometimes so converted and used for ballast in railroad work to solidify the backing between the ties, and in paving. It is called gumbo. (Sturgis, 1900)
