Plaster brown coats applied to lathing between the exterior studs of a wood frame building, leaving a small air space between the backplaster and the sheathing to keep out drafts and provide insulation. 2. Plaster applied to the inside of lath, opposite the finish side of the wall. See also backing-up coat. (Bucher, 1996)
