Heidelberg Project – Detroit, Michigan

Isaac Kremer/ May 17, 2014/ Field Notes, Physical, public art/ 0 comments

When we visited in 2014, pieces of the Heidelberg Project were still visible. This is despite efforts to raze the houses and art installation. The project and the artist behind it have been changing lives through art since 1986. At one point the Heidelberg painted dots were ubiquitous throughout Detroit. Now they are fewer and harder to find as redevelopment takes hold.

A marker remembers how “This collaborative installation symbolizes what can happen when people color a bleak urban landscape with their own histories and personalities. The once ghostly shoes become bright with life; the city grows and the art evolves.”

Inside there is admission and an improvised gift store.
