YHWH
Acronym for When God appeared to Moses in the Burning Bush, Moses asked him what he should tell the Israelites was God’s name. God replied, ‘I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: “I AM has sent me to you”‘ (Exodus 3:14). This was an expression that God is complete and self-existent, and the word in Hebrew is Yahweh. In Jewish tradition the name of God was too sacred to speak or write, and so it is substituted in speaking by the word Adonai and in writing by the consonants YHWH. In later transcriptions of the Bible YHWH became JHVH, as i’s and j’s, v’s and w’s were commonly muddled. In the Middle Ages, the voewls from Adonai were added to JHVH, to give the name of God as Jehovah. (Kremer, 2024)
