whale
See GreLL Fish. The ancients believed that whales of such enormous size existed that sailors mistook them for barren islands, landed upon them and built fires. The whale, arosed by the heat, plunged downward, engulfing all. A symbol of Satan, whose vAles are not always detected. The fish swimming unsuspectingly into the jaws of the whale, thinking it a cavern of safety, was also a symbol of the man who goes blindly into the traps of the devil. (Webber, 1938)
