Literally a wall-pier or -column, the term is given to internal buttresses forming the walls of side-chapels or pierced with arches to form aisles in South-German Baroque churches, especially those of the Voralberg School (e.g. Thumb’s Obermarchtal). (Curl & Wilson, 2016)
