trompe l’oeil painting

In French, for “fool the eye.” A drawing or painting that imitates reality so closely that it might momentarily fool a viewer into thinking the scene is real. Objects are rendered in extremely fine detail to emphasize the illusion of tactile and spatial qualities. “In its clever confusion of life and art, prefigured much later experiments with optical devices such as cameras obscura, panoramas, dioramas, and catoptric art” (King, 2000).
