The twisting and clipping of trees and shrubs into fantastic sculptured shapes in a formal garden; from the Latin word topia for a perspective mural fresco of a fanciful garden, such as those uncovered at Pompeii; boxwood and yew are the most commonly used plants; common in North America beginning 18th century.
