One of the Four Evangelists, whose symbol is a lion (often withwings). St. Mark’s Gospel was thought to emphasize Jesus’ kingship, and so he was ascribed the lion, king of the beasts. His gospel also opens withSt. John’s voice ‘crying in the wilderness’, like the roar of a lion. A lesson from the Gospel according to St. Mark is In illo tempore recambentibus undecimdisciplis (afterward he appeared unto the eleven disciples).
