St. Bartholomew
One of the Twelve Apostles, whose symbol is flaying knives. Tradition suggests he undertook missionary activities in India and Armenia. Tradition also had him flayed alive, and/or beheaded, and/or crucified upside down, at Derbend on the Caspian Sea. Bartholomew became the patron saint of tanners and leather workers. (Taylor, 2003)
