Woods of the southeastern states, consisting chiefly of loblolly, slash, longleaf, and shortleaf; the lumber is relatively strong and dense. The wood characteristics of the species overlap according to age and growth conditions. They are well fitted for heavy and light framing and for boarding. Southern yellow pine is one of the two most extensively cut woods in the U.S. (Saylor, 1952)
