Any device used to prevent snow from siding off a sloped roof, or prevent snow from sliding down and clogging gutters. Snow guards in the form of a loop of wire are often called snow hooks; ones in the form of small wooden rails, or cleats, are sometimes called snow gratings. (Phillips, 1994)
