In masonry, to throw mortar on top of a course to form a bed for the next course. Slushed work permits bricks to be laid dry on such a bed in the interior of a wall, and makes inferior work. Shoved work requires each brick in the interior of a wall to be surrounded with mortar so as to avoid any dry or open joints. (Sturgis, 1900)
