An artificial channel for directing the flow of water, such as a flume leading to a mill wheel. See also mill race. 2. A body of water controlled by a sluice gate. 3. A long, sloping trough with a series of grooves or riffles along the bottom; used in mining to separate heavy gold from lighter materials carried in water along the trough. (Bucher, 1996)
