It symbolizes the seven days of creation, the seven planets, seas, Sacraments, Gifts of the Holy Ghost, Last Words on the Cross, Penitential Psalms, days of the week, great councils of the early Church, stars in the Pleiades (supposed by the ancients to he Heaven), the lamps before the Throne of God, seals of the Book of Life, Deadly Sins, Cardinal Virtues, Works of Mercy, Patriarchs, trumpets of Jericho, baths of Naaman, Jewish festivals, deacons in the Apostolic Church, candlesticks, churches of Asia Minor, spirits before the Throne of God, candlesticks or stars or trumpets of the Apocalypse, ears of corn in Pharoah’s dream, oxen of the same, joys of Mary, sorrows of Mary, champions of Christendom, ages of man, Jacob’s years of service, etc., etc. (Webber, 1938)
