Inclined projecting surfaces, generally at fixed intervals up the face of a buttress, designed to throw rainwater away from the walls but also marking the stages in the progressive thickening of the buttress with decreasing height so as to provide the necessary, increasing counter-thrust to combat the tendency of the walls to be pushed outwards by the weight of the roof above.
