A transparent, vine-colored, paint pigment composed of organic dye mixed with alum or tin; the original organic component of brazelein dye from brazilwood, sapanwood, or parnambue from South America was replaced by aniline color in the late 19th century; a fugitive color used only on interior surfaces protected with varnish; slightly different shade than rose pink. Also known as madder lake. See also lake color. (Bucher, 1996)
