One of various hardwood trees of the genus Populus with greenish to ton, straight-grained, soft wood with no pronounced grain pattern; used primarily for painted millwork and the backing for veneer; includes balsam poplar, California balsam poplar. Also known as white wodo. 2. Wood similar to that of Populus, including paper birch and tulip tree. Also known as poplar birch, tulip poplar, yellow poplar. (Bucher, 1996)
