plastic deformation

A permanent change in the dimensions or shape of a body produced by stress greater than the elastic limit of the material, remaining rigid under stresses of less than a certain intensity. The molecular bonds in a material that exhibits plastic behavior reform after being stressed beyond the elastic limit. The material thus retains a measure of reserve strength. Also called plastic flow. (Ching, 1995)
