Drawings strictly in two dimensions that show a slice through a building, either vertical (section or elevation) or horizontal (plan). They became the norm during the Renaissance and are a vital part of the way architects communicate instruction to builders. Devices such as shadow casting are used to show relief. (Melvin, 2006)
