An opening can visually span vertically between the floor and ceiling planes, or horizontally between two wall planes. It can grow in size to occupy an entire wall of a space. A vertical opening that extends from the floor to the ceiling plane of a space will visually separate and articulate the edges of the adjacent wall planes. (Ching, 1979)
