openings between planes

An opening can visually span vertically between the floor and ceiling planes, or horizontally between two wall planes. It can grow in size to occupy an entire wall of a space. A vertical opening that extends from the floor to the ceiling plane of a space will visually separate and articulate the edges of the adjacent wall planes. (Ching, 1979)
